Acrylic Routing

What is Acrylic?

Acrylic is a versatile and transparent plastic material most commonly sold in sheets of various thicknesses, but can be found in forms such as rods or tubes. It has a glass-like quality, but can come in a range of styles from frosted or mirrored, to opaque or non-glare. It is also very weather resistant compared to most other plastics.

Why choose Acrylic Sheets for CNC Routing?

Acrylic is available in many shapes and sizes and can be moulded and coloured to fit almost any application. Routing acrylic sheets is popular because it’s solid and shatterproof. It can bond well with adhesives and solvents, and is often simple to assemble post production. Acrylic is 30 times stronger than glass, and 2 times lighter. It’s also cheaper, incredibly durable and easy and safe to work with. Cast acrylic will usually have a cleaner router cut than extruded acrylic. Depending on your product, you can get acrylic sheets in various grades too, including all-purpose, abrasion resistant, impact modified and light diffusing.

What can you make from Acrylic?

Acrylic can be cut and constructed into various designs, from signs, protective screens, windows and wall partitions, to decorative pieces, lighting fixtures and fish tanks, and is widespread in an array of different industries, from the military to medical to transportation. Acrylic routing is also commonly done for items around the home such as kitchen backsplashes, glass cabinets and shelving.
